She'll just be standing off to the side Wow. She'll just be standing off to the side all serene-like: oblivious and indifferent to the suffering and carnage going on around her. Instead he gets a job as a kind of apprentice. AND then the creepfest starts! MAN we got creepy cadavers, pictures that change after you paint them, and a great deal of vampire action. It was a delightful romp, and towards the end it also ended up being very sweet. In a weird, creepy way Great fun! I will definitely be revisiting this one in October Probably 2.
It reminded me at first of a story from Phantastes, and I thought perhaps it was the same story from a different angle However, it turned more toward a Dracula flavoured story, which was disappointing, and confessedly, dropped my rating. I think it's worth reading once if you're a MacDonald fan, however.

Dec 08, Jon Knebel rated it it was amazing. This story is clever and fun and just as creepy as any ghost story while still managing to be about redemption. I've never read a story in my life that has done that, which makes it an incredibly original story. It goes very well in the collection, "The Portent and other Stories" because therein are found distinct stories with unique whispers of ghosts, vampires, and wherewolves--completely reimagined with redemption and the soul in mind. Mar 23, Matthew McKenna rated it really liked it Shelves: short-stories. Pretty dark, clever, and sexy for something written by a christian minister.
I enjoyed it. Jan 31, Michael Jones rated it really liked it. Short story by George McDonald. Basically a young handsome man trying to make his way in the world and woo the painter's daughter. As he goes to mix paints for him, the daughter is completely unreadable much to his chagrin--she loves me, she loves me not and the father is ready to slyly defend her by scaring the young fellow.
But the young fellow is good at improvisation. A little bit of Dracula humor.

There are these little details and fragments of bizarre life. I saw them as little scenes—one detail to another little detail. The stakes are raised and the examinations intensify when the researchers start buckling down on what exactly constitutes a Bosch. Though the master is said to have had a studio, there are thought to be only about 25 paintings that have been truly touched by his hand. To determine—for the exhibition and catalog—which paintings were touched by the master, the team takes a standardized approach to examining all of the paintings. This includes not only high-resolution but also infrared photography, affording the viewer an intimate look at both types of images.
As a filmmaker, we want to give the artist a face. We want to dive into his mind. For dedicated team of Dutch researchers operating on a very limited budget, it was crucial to obtain loan of the paintings. Harvard Classics Volume Edgar Allan Poe. The Day Boy and the Night Girl.
